Rhys Millen’s record setting run on pikes peak in his time attack race ready Genesis Coupe, the video is just over three minutes and features in car footage of his record setting pass. He set a course record on his 17th run covering 12.4 miles in 12 minutes, 9.397 seconds. How do you tune for a 4,000 foot elevation change for both tarmac and dirt? Amazing stuff.

I took my project evo x out to the autox yesterday, the National Council of Corvette Clubs holds very nice autox in St Augustine, FL. The track layout was awesome; I was told that they changed it from last year because of people complaining, so they fixed it. I started using launch control once I got used to the track and disabled my traction control all the way off and was able to shave off 6 seconds with my last run being the best. In open class I took home the trophy with the field of competitors being a BMW 335i, and Nismo 350z. The Nismo was running consistent 1 minute times while the 335i started to gain on me later on the day breaking into the 57 second times. I was able to pilot the evo x into the low 56 second range and on the last run I blew em all away at with a 55 second run.

I was able to get to the top of 3rd on the straights about 80ish mph using launch control before the hard break and shift down into 2nd where i wouldnt have to shift again for the rest of the run.

The Nito Invo’s held up really well, they were never unpredictable but took awile to get to temp. I expected this because these are not really an autox tire.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe when equipped with a manual boost controler ( MBC ) has been showing some really nice gains in power & torque in the midrange. AMS reports about 45hp!

Here is a dyno plot from AMS comparing the stock oem boost control vs a MBC.

The buzz also is that the Mitsubishi Lancer Raliart and Hyundai Genesis Coupe have essentially the same engine.

AMS Performance accounced on their blog that they have been developing an MR/Raliart SST tranmission cooler that uses a high quality Setrab cooler and Fan.

Setrab has been around for over 20 years and has its hands in many forms of racing. I dug up that they have been involved in fomula 1, nascar, rally and endurance racing so you can be sure that the core they choose will be up to the job.

South Side Performance now has a Clutch Pack for your SST MR or Raliart.
SOUTH SIDE PERFORMANCE INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST SST UPGRADED CLUTCH PACKS FOR THE EVO X MR AND RALLIART:

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (April 17, 2009) – South Side Performance has become a name in the R35 GTR market as the company that makes and supports some of the highest horsepower GTR‘s. With a handful of fist’s for the extremely of what some say is one of the world’s most advanced sports car under its belt, it has spent more than a fair amount of r and d time with the GR6 twin clutch transmission and this time has allowed the company to find some new ways to beef up some of the weak points that seem to be issues that are not unique to the GTR’s dual clutch box, but are shared by nearly every dual clutch transmission on the market today. After many phone calls and hundreds of e-mails, SSP decided to go ahead and start work on their own TC-SST upgrade solution, using what they had learned the GTR.

So after a flood of emails and days of filled voice mail boxes, we would like to officially announce Project Goliath TC-SST. During this project we are co-operating with a few individual SST owners as well as one major staple in the Evo X tuner community to produce a solution that will end the bickering between GSR owners and MR owners over whose car is better. The goal is to use hundreds of hours of development and R and D for the GTR’s GR6 to create a wide array of components for the SST transmission in order to increase its ability to support high horsepower applications. SSP has experience with high horsepower AWD cars and knows that clutch packs are going to be a point of weakness once certain power levels are exceeded. So, we are responding to the known limitations of high torque applications for MR owners and have designed a solution to increase the torque holding capacity of the SST as far as we can beginning with a clutch pack set that should well exceed 400 ft lbs of TQ capacity, with an even more capable set of discs to follow soon after.

Specifications:
At SSP we believe that one size rarely fits all and it is because of this that we are offering two different models of clutch packs. The first of these packs is out RT clutch set pack, which is designed to increase the TQ holding capacity of the transmission by a significant margin. This increase in capacity is a result of the new discs’ 25% greater gripping force than the stock clutch packs due to an increased surface area. The disc itself is a complex compound of cotton, carbon fiber, synthetic organic fibers, and other materials. These new materials add to the strength of the discs while still retaining the properties that allow it to hold up in the submerged oil environment of the SST’s valve body. This technology is tried and tested as it is a compound we spend months of R and D working on for the GR6 Dual Clutch box for the R35 GTR.

The RT discs are meant for customers who want more power than their existing discs will handle, and will handle high horsepower application with a TQ rating of 438 Ft/Lbs of TQ @200 Degrees F. This is a significant factor because the torque capacity of the SST clutch packs are a combination of strength and durability of materials used for the discs themselves and temperature of the transmission oil that the Discs are submerged in.

Not being the type of company to solve only half of the equation and leave the rest to chance, we will also be offering a SST transmission cooler that is essentially a three part solution to keeping temperatures in check. This solution begins with a specially designed deep dish oil pan that allows for 4 Liters of increased trans oil capacity, and continues with the addition of a high volume oil pump that pushes the oil thru a closed loop system which contains a dual fanned bar and plate style cooler placed at the rear of the car in order to get it as far away from the heat source as possible. This is the same basic design methodology that was used on our R35 cooler, but has been customized to improve the weaknesses in the SST cooling abilities from the factory. The cooler will be available as a standalone option for $2,200.00 or as a package with the clutch discs for $3,150.00. This is the first solution for owners who are worried about breaking their clutches and want a comprehensive solution other than buying an entirely new transmission.

This upgrade is extremely delicate in nature, and as such it needs to be performed by the right shop with the right equipment and experience to get the job done correctly. Because of this, it cannot be done at just any transmission shop. As a result, you must bring your SST equipped car to a shop with experience working with the SST, or ship the car or transmission directly to SSP or any of their soon to be released partner shops with facilities to do the upgrade. This modification is only one part of a package solution to allow any SST owner to strengthen their transmission as a whole and allow SST owners to hold the power that their GSR counterparts can and more.

Price and Availability:
This upgrade is available for pre-order for $1,199.00 for the RT Clutch Packs sst-clutch-pack

If you haven’t seen this weeks top gear, Jeremy try’s to escape the might of the British Royal Forces in an Evo VII that he quotes has 500 horsepower.  He was chased by tanks though a rally style course was the evo got a proper thrashing. I’m surprised he didn’t break his back again because some parts he got thrashed around pretty good.

The UK Army used live rounds with the most impressive being the deadly .50 cal. The evo was actual set for a crushing but Jeremy saved it and allowed us to see a more entertaining death for this car. Let this be a lesson to you all, deal drugs in the U.K and get your car destroyed by Top Gear.
